How it works
The compulsory basic safety and navigation practical training lasts a minimum of 16 hours and is required to obtain the qualification.
It covers safety and the checks needed before setting out, passage planning, fire prevention and fire-fighting, the boat's engines and electrical system, their maintenance, pollution prevention and ropework.
You also practise berthing, leaving the berth and other manoeuvres in port, anchoring, monitoring and controlling your course, navigating with charts and GNSS equipment, and a range of safety manoeuvres.
The training also includes real situations such as the man overboard manoeuvre, using the MOB function, towing and the precautions to take during rescue operations.
The aim is for the student to carry over to the boat what they have studied in theory and start developing the judgement needed to take responsibility for a boat and the people on board.
